If you have been diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer, it is likely that by now you have received quite a lot of information – alongside conversations with your healthcare team, you may also have been given additional information in the form of leaflets, books, or links to further resources online.

It is common to feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of the information available, and despite all the paper or digital information you can have access to, you may still have a lot of questions. For example: “How do I plan for the future?” or “Where do I go for financial help during my treatment?” or “What other resources are there available in my area?” or “How can I meet other people like me?”.

The Enzalutamide & me patient support programme has been created to help with as many of your questions as possible, but there are plenty of other reputable, national and international resources that can give you more support too. Here are some links that can help you find the right support for you, and your family:

Prostate Cancer UK is a charity that invests millions of pounds to find better treatments and tests for cancer patients. The Prostate Cancer UK website contains a large amount of information that is easy to navigate and also contains information about your nearest local support group, one-to-one support with a trained volunteer and online communities who are facing similar experiences and challenges.

Tackle is the only patient-led UK-wide charity representing people with prostate cancer and their carers. If you or your family need to talk to someone, Tackle offers a free national helpline or email. You can also find a local support group and downloadable guides on various aspects of prostate cancer, including the condition itself, financial support and travel insurance. There is also a range of ‘How-to Guides’ available for family, friends, women and children.

Orchid is a UK-leading charity offering an extensive range of support services to everyone affected by male cancer. These services include a free national helpline and email, a portfolio of support publications and a dedicated patient support website. Orchid also runs roadshows across the UK offering support and information for patients and families.

Macmillan is another UK-leading charity made up of supporters, professionals, volunteers and campaigners, who are all passionate about making life better for people living with cancer. In addition to providing a free helpline, Macmillan offers a range of resources, publications, support tools and information videos. You can also access stories on patient and carer experiences to learn what happened, how they coped and what helped.

Cancercare.org has been providing 75 years of help and hope to people living with cancer. Here you can find information about counselling, support groups and financial assistance. You can also access one-hour workshops led by experts, over the phone or online, for up-to-date, in-depth information about cancer-related issues.

Healthtalk.org is run by the Dipex Charity and offers hundreds of real-life experiences of those living with health conditions such as prostate cancer. Here you can learn about the experiences of 67 men currently living with prostate cancer from symptoms, treatment, and side effects to the impact that the condition has had on their family and friends.

You might decide that support organisations are not for you at the moment, and that’s fine too. Just remember you have lots of options should you need to reach out to someone who understands in the future.
